Vinho Verde
VEEN-yo VEHR-deh
Green as in young

Northern Portugal's light, often spritzy whites (and some reds). Alvarinho, Loureiro, Trajadura — not a grape, a place, and a mood.
- lime
- citrus blossom
- green apple
- spritz
- herbs
'Verde' means the wine is meant young, not that it is green in the glass. Cheap Vinho Verde is slightly fizzy and simple. Alvarinho from Monção e Melgaço is essentially Albariño with extra snap, and can be still, serious, and age-worthy.
Red Vinho Verde (Vinhão) is inky, acid, and a local secret with fatty pork.
Seafood, first-course salads, and a warm afternoon.
