The heel, and Primitivo

Vineyard landscape
Vineyard landscape

Italy's sun-baked heel: Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Nero di Troia, plus a coast of interesting whites. Volume country that now bottles real character.

  • ripe cherry
  • licorice
  • sun-dried tomato
  • spice
  • cocoa

Primitivo di Manduria is Zinfandel with a southern Italian accent — often riper, sometimes sweet-edged. Negroamaro (Salice Salentino) is darker and more bitter-savory. The best growers pick earlier and keep the alcohol in the room.

It is still a value cellar. That will not last forever.

Orecchiette with broccoli rabe, grilled lamb, and aged caciocavallo.
