Ripeness with ambition

Napa Valley floor and mountains

A short valley with a long reputation. Cabernet is the headline; the mountain AVAs and cooler Carneros are the plot.

  • cassis
  • cocoa
  • mint
  • ripe cherry
  • vanilla

Napa is warmer than Bordeaux and more consistent, which is both the gift and the argument. Valley-floor Cabernet is plush; Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder, Diamond Mountain, and Pritchard Hill are more tannic and structured. Carneros, at the south, is cooler — Chardonnay and Pinot country.

Oak, alcohol, and ripeness defined a generation. A newer one is picking earlier, using less new barrel, and talking about site again. Both can be excellent; they are different drinks.

These wines want protein and a large glass. They are not picnic Cabernets.

Vintage

Valley-floor Cabernet drinks earlier than mountain fruit. 2017 and 2020 need a producer you trust on smoke.
