Nebbiolo

The name everyone asks for. Hard to visit. Worth the try; don't build the trip on a yes.

Appointment, often no. Drink Gaja in a restaurant if the door stays shut.

How this place works

Many cantine are family kitchens. Book through Consorzio sites or the estate. Langhe roads are switchbacks. Taste Barbera at lunch so the Nebbiolo still has a chance at 4 p.m.

Best window: April–June and September–October. Alba's truffle weeks are crowded on purpose. Fog in November is the postcard and a driving hazard.
