Italy
Piedmont
pyeh-MON-teh
Nebbiolo, fog, and hill towns. Barolo and Barbaresco are close on a map and a day apart in a car.
Map

- When to go
- April–June and September–October. Alba's truffle weeks are crowded on purpose. Fog in November is the postcard and a driving hazard.
- Grapes
- Nebbiolo · Barbera · Dolcetto · Moscato
Tasting rooms
Many cantine are family kitchens. Book through Consorzio sites or the estate. Langhe roads are switchbacks. Taste Barbera at lunch so the Nebbiolo still has a chance at 4 p.m.
Gaja
Barbaresco
BookGUY-ah
The name everyone asks for. Hard to visit. Worth the try; don't build the trip on a yes.
Appointment, often no. Drink Gaja in a restaurant if the door stays shut.
Nebbiolo · Barbaresco — if the door is shut, order it with dinner
Produttori del Barbaresco
Barbaresco
Bookpro-doot-TOR-ee del bar-bah-RESS-ko
The co-op that still matters. Village wines and crus. The town is walkable.
More reachable than the trophy names. Book.
Nebbiolo · A Barbaresco cru, not just the base
Vietti
Castiglione Falletto
Bookvee-ET-tee
Barolo crus and an Arneis that reminds you white exists here.
Appointment. Castiglione is a good lunch town.
Nebbiolo · Arneis · Castiglione Barolo, then the Arneis
G.D. Vajra
Vergne
BookVAI-rah
Generous, well-run, and they still grow Dolcetto like it matters.
One of the kinder Barolo visits if you write ahead.
Nebbiolo · Dolcetto · Barbera · Bricco delle Viole if they have it
Ceretto
Alba / Monsordo
Bookcheh-RET-to
The glass cube, the Blangé, and a foot in both towns.
Easier logistics from Alba. Book.
Nebbiolo · Arneis · Blangé Arneis, then a Barolo
Barale Fratelli
Barolo
BookBarale Fratelli
Cellars under the town, not a hilltop gatehouse.
Weekday hours. Book the tasting.
Nebbiolo · Barale Fratelli
Francesco Borgogno
Barolo
BookFrancesco Borgogno
Family cellar in Barolo. A guided tour and five wines.
Monday to Saturday. Write ahead.
Nebbiolo · Francesco Borgogno

Appointment. One village is enough.

Itinerary
Alba, Barbaresco, then one Barolo ridge
2–3 days
Sleep in Alba. Half-day Barbaresco. Full day in Barolo comune-hopping with a driver.
Day 1
Alba
Walk, eat, one Ceretto or town tasting. No heroics.
Day 2
Barbaresco
Produttori, the tower, lunch. Short distances.
Day 3
Barolo ridge
Vajra or Vietti. One village walk. Home before the fog.
Barolo and Barbaresco after a wet year need time. Don't judge a young bottle in a tasting room like it's ready.
