Granite, altitude, and Touriga Nacional with more lift than the Douro. Portugal's Burgundy, if you need a shortcut.

Surrounded by mountains, the Dão is cooler than the Douro. Reds are often more fragrant and less dense; whites (Encruzado) can be grand. The region was once strangled by cooperatives and is now a source of precise, mountain wines.
If Douro is the canyon, Dão is the forest.
Roast chicken, pork, and mountain cheeses.
