Colchagua
Warm valley, Carménère
What should I drink from here?
South of Santiago. A wide, warm valley where Carménère and Cabernet do the work.
- black plum
- red pepper
- cocoa
- warm earth
Colchagua sits in the O'Higgins region, inland from the coast and warmer than Casablanca. Carménère is the grape people come for. Cabernet Sauvignon is the other half of the serious reds.
Viña Santa Cruz is in Lolol, on the old Hacienda Lolol, about 180 km from Santiago. Ask for Chamán Reserva, the Carménère. They also pour País and a méthode traditionnelle sparkler. The visit is by appointment.
One cellar is the day. Do not try to do Maipo in the same afternoon.
