In Burgundy and Alsace, a vineyard at the top of the hierarchy. In Champagne, a village. In Bordeaux, a château classification. The words do not travel.
Burgundy Grand Cru is a specific plot (Montrachet, Chambertin). Champagne Grand Cru is a village rating from an old scale. Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a broad tier; Grand Cru Classé is the tighter club. German Grosses Gewächs is the dry top of the VDP pyramid, not a legal 'Grand Cru' in the French sense.
Paying for the words without knowing the grower is how you buy disappointing bottles. The hierarchy was built by history, not by your palate.
