Lake Bolsena

Lake Bolsena

Volcanic water, Tuscia

What should I drink from here?
Vineyard landscape
Vineyard landscape

The largest volcanic lake in Europe, in northern Lazio. The wine is Aleatico, Procanico, and Roscetto, grown on the old crater rim.

  • rose
  • red berry
  • volcanic stone
  • almond

Gradoli, on the north shore, is the name on the sweet Aleatico. The dry wines from the same hills are quieter and harder to find outside the cellar.

Villa Caviciana is the first working farm the FAI looks after: organic vines, a cellar cut into the hill, and a view of Isola Bisentina. Book the tour. The lawn is the easy hour.

This is not Tuscany, even though the border is close. One estate is the visit. Do not try to do Montalcino the same day.
